
“Cognition” has often been used to refer to conscious activities such as problem solving, thinking and reasoning (Eysenck and Keane 2000), wherein these events frequently have been cast as mental processes. According to the complete Oxford English Dictionary “cognition” is defined as “The action or faculty of knowing; knowledge, consciousness; acquaintance with a subject; the action or faculty of knowing taken in its widest sense, including sensation, perception, conception, etc., as distinguished from feeling and volition; also, more specifically, the action of cognizing an object in perception proper (OED, 1994 version).
